About
the Illustrator, Itoko Maeno
Since arriving in the United States in 1982, Itoko Maeno has illustrated
more than twenty six children's picture books with her enchanting,
softly classic watercolor characters. Four of her titles have
won national awards, including the Benjamin Franklin Award for
Best Picture Book in 1989.
A self-professed lover of detail, Maeno enjoys the creative
process of each project. "I love the way the images evolve,"
she explains. "As I do my research for each assignment, carefully
sketching the characters and surrounding environment, I often
become part of that character. Sometimes they surprise me. They
take on a life of their own, like an animated movie," she admits.
Maeno easily visualizes each composition. Favoring nature, flowers
and particularly cats, Maeno projects an international flair,
having traveled extensively throughout the world. Cultural customs
and celebrations, architecture and fashion style have impacted
Maeno's artwork, which she describes as "authentic, semi-realistic,
and appealing to all ages."
With a zest for the whimsical and an intense attention to detail,
Maeno brings a unique sense of fun to the Paper Posie product
line.
Though Maeno lives in Santa Barbara, California, her artwork
has been exhibited and admired nationwide. She enjoys teaching
for the Santa Barbara Museum of Art,
reading and growing flowers. She is a graduate of Tokyo's Tama
Art University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Graphic Design.
